Firstly, some photographs that engage and inspire me...
|
Here are a few photographs that inspired me from a range of different photographers. They all show a range of: fairy-tale, surrealism, dreams and nightmares and magic. I find that all these photographs show a sense of imagination and they all have a different story to tell. |
Nicolas Bruno
|
Nicolas Bruno (born 1993) is a photography student at Purchase College in New York. His work has been exhibited at the Soren Christensen Gallery in New Orleans and the Passage Gallery in Purchase, New York. Explore on Yatzer. Bruno has Sleep paralysis and he uses that to create his photographs. ''I have experienced bone chilling hallucinations and extreme terror during these dreams: faceless silhouetted figures, embraces from shadow-like hands, the warping of reality around me - all the while being completely paralyzed in the midst of being awake and sleeping.'' |
something I like...
Firstly, I believe that Nicolas Bruno's photographs all link within the nightmare category. This image is one that I particularly admire from Nicolas' work. Using this dark colour scheme consisting of blacks and greys has given the image a sense of sadness and depression. Smoke in the background implies that something bad is looming within the air. The shadow of the person stood inside the shack creates a sense of loneliness. |

Brook Shaden, I believe, follows a pattern within the
themes and context behind her photographs. This image, is no exception from this pattern and I yet find myself in inspiration for how the image has been composed and the techniques used within the image. Firstly, I believe that this image is in the theme of Dreams and Nightmares. I like how this photograph has been edited to make her look as if she is coming out of the book. I also like the way the photographer has used a low depth of field which shows the twigs in the background as well as the girl and book in the foreground but makes the girl stand out more It looks as if the photograph has an earthy kind of filter to create natural tones within the image, over all I think her hair stands out the most within the tone. There is a slight glow within the image which creates a sense of magic within the girl and the book. |
Alex Stoddard

On referencing his project, he says, "I spent most of the year that I was engaged in the project by myself, so I had a lot of time to delve into my own mind and really come to know myself ". |

Alex Stoddard . Firstly, I believe that this image is in the theme of Dreams and Nightmares. I like how this photograph has been edited to make him look as if he is falling off a cliff. I also like the way the photographer has used a low depth of field to create a blur in the background and focused on the texture of the rock and the person. It looks as if the photograph has an earthy kind of filter to create natural tones within the image. There is a slight glow within the image which creates a sense of magic. |
First shoot, Magic...
|
For my first shoot I decided to do a Magical theme . For this shoot it is going to be Harry Potter. I chose this theme because I am a fan of harry potter and it goes with the theme of magic. On the left are some photographs that captivate my attention. |
Second shoot. surrealism.
|
For my Third shoot I decided to do surrealism due to the fascinating and compelling photographs that have come from this theme by other photographers. On the left are some photographs that captivate my attention.
|
My third shoot is based on surrealism. I'm going to use this photograph as my inspiration in this shoot. I decided to re-create the photograph on the left to be in my shoot. The photograph will take a process of editing by using a photograph of a person and a dandelion and putting in a background. Here is the process below...

personal best...
I believe that this is my best photo from this shoot as it is clear and in focus.
final piece...
In this shoot I used photo plus to edit a photograph of someone that I took to make it look as if she was getting carried away.
Third Shoot dreams.
for shoot Five i have decided to do dreams due to the intriguing photographs i have seen.
Fourth shoot. nightmares
|
For shoot Four I have decided to do nightmare. In comparison to Surrealism, they both look quite similar. However, I find that Nightmare is more intimidating and more fearful. On the left are some photographs that captivate my attention.
|
In this shoot I used photo plus to edit this image of a person duplicating in a eerie forest scenery. I used a range of different photographs and changed their transparency to make it look more daunting.
Fifth shoot. surrealism
Personal favourite...
In this shoot I used photo plus to edit a photograph of an eye that I took, I used another iris to change the colour to do different colour eyes. Using photo plus I changed the colour of the photo to a sketch effect. I then used different layers to create the effect of someone holding the eye.
My best photographs throughout all shoots...
Evaluation...
Overall, I feel that the unit of Weird and wonderful was a good learning curve to introduce myself to the basics of editing in photography. Throughout this unit I have learnt many different skills to use with the editing tools.
Changing the aperture settings, adapting through different editing settings was difficult, but I think that I have grown much more confident in using these features when taking images using photo plus If I had more time on this unit I think I would improve the themes for more detail.
